ah - Drawing the Portrait - Wednesday Morning Class for Adults - April 3rd through May 15th - 9:30 to 12:00

Explore your creativity in 2024! This class is designed for all levels of artists, from beginner to experienced. We will learn the fundamentals of drawing the portrait with an emphasis on proportions, working to develop our own unique style of mark making. I will explain my drawing techniques step-by-step so that you can follow along.

My hope is to re-think drawing with the premise that everyone, no matter their experience, can produce strong work and grow in confidence and ability. Think of this as a drawing class…one that will hone your observation skills. Nothing fine-tunes your drawing like the study of the human form! The more you draw, the better you will paint, whatever the subject.

“Drawing the Portrait” will meet six Wednesday mornings, from 9:30 to 12:00 at the Lihue Public Library conference room, beginning Wednesday, April 3rd and ending Wednesday, May 15th. (There will be no class on Wednesday, May 1st.)

Students will bring their own art materials. I will send you a suggested supply list when you enroll.

Some of the topics we will cover will be: 

• How to block in a portrait, the head, neck and shoulders
• How to work from a photograph
• How to work from a model (Models will pose for four of the six classes.)
• How to choose reference images
• How to achieve a likeness
• How to use a variety of drawing materials, as well as mixed media techniques, to depict the portrait

Over the course of six classes, I’ll demonstrate the use of graphite, charcoal and pastel. Students are welcome to use the material of their choice, including dry media, ink or watercolor, or may opt for working entirely in graphite pencil or charcoal. In the Library conference room we will be seated at large tables. It’s a large room so easels may be used by those of you who have them and prefer to work upright. I hope you can join us!
